The Generations: Each of the nine generations listed is populated by the noted number of individuals, irrespective of the branch/parents to which they belong.  There are 209 of them, all born Jecks (or one of the spelling variations).

The Parts: Each of the four Parts includes the noted number of individuals who lived in the regions (parishes) described.  There are 220 of them, as counted from the Trees.  That includes the 209 in the "generations", 3 included twice (Robert (2/4), Robert (4/1), Isaac 5/17)), and 8 of generation 10 recorded in Parts D-1 and D-2 to complete the story of the families concerned.

The Nine Generations of Jecks in Book 1

When viewing all three Jecks genealogical “books” together, this account of the Jecks family of South Norfolk covers five centuries.  Book 1 alone encompases nine generations of Jecks, covering about three and a half centuries from circa 1475. The family used and reused certain Christian names so many times that confusion would be inevitable in any written account without some method of distinction.  Thus each Jecks within the first nine generations in Book 1 has been numbered in the form (x/y) as detailed in the genealogical charts, where x is the number of the generation from the first known Jecks in this family and y is the sequential number within that generation, irrespective of individual family units.  As an example, the numbers 4/5 listed after Thomas Jecks (1584-1650) indicate he was one of the fourth generation of Jecks, and was the fifth Jecks of that generation as listed from the left on the genealogical chart.

Jecks by the Numbers

Since the Earliest Times

As already noted, the name Jecks is rare.  This website covers virtually all descendants of the Jecks name, as far as is known at this time.  This does not include those of the Jex family name ... acknowledging that Jecks who spelt their name Jex on occasion are included, and Jex who spelt their name Jecks are excluded.

So how many are there?  Here is a summary from the earliest times until about 100 years ago, or about 1920:

Book 1: The first 9 generations       .........................................

Book 2: The descendants of Isaac Jecks

              of Wisbech & Norwich, generations 10 - 13 ..............

Book 3: The descendants of Charles James Jecks and

              William Jecks of London, generations 10 - 13 ............

Total Jecks individuals, all 13 generations .............................

Not forgetting the Jecks born within the last 100 years or so, which when included make about 450 in all.  Less than 500 Jecks born within a time span of five centuries.

Registrations in Modern Times

As an indication of the completeness of the above in modern times, a tally was taken of all Jecks births registered at the General Register Office for England & Wales from the very first entries mid 1837 until 1913, just before WW1.  There are 100 of these registrations, including two spelt "Jeckes" (but excluding any "Jex").

Of these, 76% are Jecks referred to on this website.  The remaining 24% (which includes the two registered as Jeckes) upon investigation are mostly mis-spelt versions of other families, such as Jex, Jacks, Jakes.  The last few are children of undetermined parenthood on the father's side, being illegitimate.
